A plate camera uses a mount that is already on the vehicle and already has a light beside it. That is the whole of its appeal: no drilling, no new hole in a tailgate, and a lens sitting at bumper height where the thing you are about to hit actually is. The view is low and close: a bollard, a curb, a bumper. That is what you want when parking and less than you want when hitching a trailer.
Two practical checks before you order. First, the frame: some plate frames sit proud enough to foul a tailgate or a rear door, so open yours and look at the clearance with the camera housing in place. Second, the pairing: the add-on cameras on this page belong to a particular system, and the code on the back of your monitor is what decides which one fits. An LK8 camera and an LK10 monitor will not talk to each other.
